World’s largest telescope will search heavens for habitable planets like Earth
A giant telescope powerful enough to identify habitable planets like Earth in distant solar systems is to be built by scientists.
The European Extremely Large Telescope will be the first optical telescope capable of picking out the weak pinpricks of light that are reflected from planets as they orbit stars.
Astronomers claim the huge instrument, which will house a mirror the width of five double decker buses placed end to end, will be able to spot rocky Earth-like planets up to 100 million million miles away.
The telltale signatures in the light coming from such planets could also reveal whether there is water on their surfaces, which gases are in their atmospheres, and even if they may harbour life itself.
It will be the first time planets outside our own solar system have been seen using light from their surface. Current telescopes are not powerful enough to detect even giant planets in this way as the light they reflect is overwhelmed by far brighter stars.
The 1 billion euro (£700 million) E-ELT will have more mirror glass than all the other telescopes in the world put together.
It is expected to be so powerful that if astronomers were to use it to peer at the Moon, they would be able to see the car sized lunar rover that was left on the moon by astronauts during the Apollo missions.
With such high resolution, scientists believe they will be able to see Earth-like planets that orbit stars within a region known as the habitable zone, an area far enough away from the star around which it orbits to not be too hot to support life, but also not to far away and too cold.
As astronomers this year celebrate 400 years since Galileo first used a telescope with a lens just an inch wide to study the heavens, British scientists on Thursday presented the detailed scientific case for building the new giant telescope which will be four times larger than any other telescope yet built.
Isobel Hook, joint chair of the E-ELT science working group and an astronomer at Oxford University, said: “The astronomy community has been moving towards building progressively bigger telescopes to get sharper images.
“The resolution of the ELT is going to allow us to see objects and structures in the universe that we have been blind to until know.”
There are currently 344 known planets outside our own solar system which have been detected indirectly by looking for changes in light coming from stars as the planets pass in front of them. Almost all are gas giants similar to Jupiter.

The E-ELT, which will gather more than 15 times more light than telescopes currently in operation, will be able to directly see small rocky planets as they orbit their stars.
By analysing the spectrum of the light reflected from these planets, it should also be possible to determine whether they have water or even vegetation on the surface.
Professor Andrew Cameron, an astronomer at University of St Andrews, said: “If they live up to the design goal, we will be able to detect Earth-like planets tens of light years away.
“There are lots of stars within that range, so there is real potential for finding a terrestrial planet that could sustain life.”
Construction of the E-ELT, which is being funded by the European Southern Observatory, an international research organisation made up of 14 European countries including Britain, is expected to start in 2010 and the telescope is due to be operational by 2018.
A decision on where the telescope will be located is to be taken at the end of this year. Candidates include La Palma in the Canary Islands and Chile.
The E-ELT will use 906 hexagonal segments – each four and a half feet across – that will be pieced together to work together as a single mirror housed inside a giant rotatable dome. Each segment will have to be continually adjusted by computers to produce a single image.
In the past, optical telescopes on Earth have also been hindered by turbulence in the atmosphere which can leave images of stars and galaxies slightly fuzzy.
This problem led to astronomers building expensive space telescopes like the Hubble Space Telescope which can operate outside of the Earth’s atmosphere.
Astronomers behind the E-ELT, however, plan to use new technology that could make future space telescopes unnecessary.
They propose to use powerful lasers positioned at several points around the giant mirror that will be fired more than 55 miles up through the atmosphere to create a faint “artificial star”.
This artificial star can then be used to measure the level of blurring that the atmosphere is causing and a special deformable mirror can be adjusted to compensate.
Scientists claim this will allow them to achieve some of the clearest images of our universe ever achieved from the surface of the planet.
Colin Cunningham, director of the E-ELT programme in the UK, said: “There will be more glass in this telescope than there is in all the other telescopes currently in use around the world put together.
“The detail it will allow us to see is four times greater than we can currently get. It is very exciting.”

One of the largest and most eye-catching pieces featured in the galleries, “Fan Screen,” depicts an array of exquisite cypress fans, each one augmented by its unique ornamentations and the vibrantly colored threads that create them.
On the other side of the room, the piece “Golden Pine” draws eyes with the metallic luster of its golden threads, which form bonsai-like limbs that give way to sprawling fans of pine needles.
Finally, one of the most impressive and moving pieces featured in the galleries is “Pine of Nindo – Moonlight” by Judy Lin, which uses texture and well-blended thread colors to create an almost painting-like depiction of a tree clinging to a cliff. According to the text that accompanies this piece, the image is meant to symbolize the importance of patience and endurance: “Even under a scorching sun and enduring severe cold, everything is just a condition. And it is among Nuido (a patient world where everyone must endure).”
In addition to beautifully embroidered images, gallery guests will also get a chance to learn about the special technical skills and even the spiritual components of Nuido from several of the pieces on display.
At the JEC, students must learn how to stitch patterns such as the double central braid from phase five, which appears in the piece “Resonance Chords,” and lines of short stitch holding from phases six, which appears in the piece “Eternal Grace.” To master this complex art, students must achieve skills from all 20 phases.
However, the acquisition of technical skills and knowledge about these types of stitches is just one part of this deep-seated art.
To become a true artist in Nuido, students must also develop artistic sensitivity and awareness and understand the spiritual aspects of shishu (Japanese embroidery), which leads ultimately to a state of peace, calm and harmony.
These internal aspects are important because of the deep connection that persists between the artist’s heart and the skill of his work, according to the JEC.
Prior to the development of this art form in Japanese culture, it was a symbol of status that was used simply to decorate the clothes of nobles or items for religious ceremonies.
Though the precise origin of embroidery is uncertain, embroidered artifacts have been found in several ancient societies, including ancient Egypt and Greece. The technique itself is thought to have arisen within the Orient.
Before making its way to Japan, embroidery first arose in China, where the earliest piece of Chinese embroidery ever found is more than 2,000 years old. China was the first country in the world to discover the use of silk, the production of which gave rise to embroidery. And during China’s Han Dynasty (206 B.C. – 220 A.D.), the art became much more prevalent, causing it to spread through Korea and then Japan.
Today, embroidery can be found in any part of the world as a regular decoration for many housold items and clothes.

Yang Lin is one of China’s top designers. He is adamant that “Western fashion norms are not the only standard”.Model Mo Wandan said, “I just adore wearing these gowns, they are so elegant, so modern but so Asian.” Mo, who has modeled for many big brands, such as Paris-based Amsler, won the “best model award” at the Beijing Fashion Week. More often than not, she said, she could not tell whether Chinese designers or their foreign counterparts had designed the dresses she modeled as both were excellent in terms of style and material.
“About 10 years ago, when color make-up first appeared in Beijing, people were astonished or even afraid when they saw a blaze of color on the faces of models,” said Wang Qing, Deputy Director, China National Garment Association and also Director-General of the Beijing International Fashion Week “But now young people dye their hair and young career women use make-up to brighten their lives,” he said.
“The days when people wore the same grey or black or blue suits, shoes and hairstyle on the streets of Beijing are long gone,” recalls Wang, adding that the Chinese perception of fashion as late as the early 1990s consisted of ladies wearing a cheongsam (pronounced ‘chongsam’).
China’s joining the World Trade Organization in 2001 saw more and more foreign designers choose to present their designs in Beijing. Famous French designer Jean-Luc Amsler told China Features that he came to Beijing to debut his new Amsler collection because “Beijing has a more and more professional approach to fashion“. The 43-year-old futuristic designer said he would set up chain stores in Shanghai or Hong Kong but would definitely hold fashion shows in Beijing, which is a political and cultural centre.
Amsler presented his new collection in Beijing in November. “Expect me back with new designs,” he grinned. “Beijing is a fashion city like Paris or Milan,” said Amsler, adding he hopes to cooperate with talented and creative Chinese designers to integrate Chinese culture in his designs.
“As a historical and cultural centre, Beijing is a natural stage for foreign and domestic designers to present their creativity,” said Wang, adding that Beijing could be a fashion- resenting centre, and the more affluent Shanghai could become a major fashion consumer.

I am in the process of finding out a topic for a anthropology dissertation , more specifically in forensic anthropology. Although I am quite sure what I want to do, I am interested in having views of others in the fields, and where they think research is lacking. With a bit of luck, my ideas will be amongst the areas suggested!
I am particularly interested in your thoughts on the fields of forensic anthropology, bioarchaeology, and human osteology to write my social anthropology dissertation. Not so much paleoanthropology (unless it is about AMHs, and then perhaps it might be of use).
As for the research on sexing/ageing...I do think it is imperative to keep trying out the methods and finding methods for isolated bones. This can help keep the methods fresh and constantly make improvements to them. Also, the isolated bone methods can be of use in trying to recognize unidentified remains or help un-mix commingled remains.
That being said, I still don't really want to do that for a dissertation topic. Like you said, not very original.
That is why I am trying to see if others have noticed areas missing needed information. I have been doing literature reviews (especially Journal of Forensic Sciences and American Journal of Physical Anthro. to find topics I feel need more information, but sometimes others see things that a person can miss on their own.

Often times dissertation are based on improvements to or gaps in research already conducted. While it may get your degree, this is safe...and boring. Unfortunately, a lot of the research that can be conducted in forensic anthropology is this sort of improvement-based research. I've read numerous papers, theses, etc. on new (and obscure) ways to age, sex, etc. a skeleton. This stuff can already be done. I don’t care if the sphenoid can be used in age determination (which I don't think it can, but you get the point).
I suggest that you sit down, pretend that you are a child and ponder the mysteries of the field. Find something that's hardly been touched...or think of new ways to interpret things. My adviser once told me that what he likes most about new students is that they haven't been corrupted by the field. If you can find a topic that you're really passionate about it will make the research so much easier.
I'd like more research on various indigenous agricultural technologies, including Egyptian use of the Nile River delta and examples of relatively high standards of living which complemented the natural world.
Also, I would like more emphasis in proper representation of the physical features of ancient civilizations. For example, no more white Egyptians or white Jesus.
Finally, I am interested in variable diets of indigenous people and the effects of such diets on their physical bodies... for example, did some people have better eyesight than others? or did some people have fewer diseases than others?... all of which relating to diet, of course. I hope this will help in writing anthropology dissertations.
